HYPAC
Hackney Young People Affected by Crime (HYPAC) was an East London Foundation Trust provision, funded by the YOT to work with Off Centre as a partner agency and other organisations such as victim support. Crime against young people can range from racial harassment, assault, domestic violence, sexual abuse, experiences of violence in another country to bullying , being a victim of crime or witness to a crime. (This is not an inclusive list as there are many other ways young people can be affected by crime). HYPAC’s aim was to provide community based interventions to the clients and their families which would include the following:
- Providing Counselling
- One to one support sessions
- Promoting self confidence and increasing self esteem
- Enhancing motivation
- Developing strategies and skills for dealing with conflict in a non violent way
- Promoting better communication
- A wide range of group and outside based activities
- Access & Support to expert advice regarding court cases
- Problem solving skills
The project came into operation June 2008, the project received over 1000 referrals from different sources which in turn built a positive bridge between both Statutory and Voluntary services in Hackney. Part of the HYPAC service, following an incident, was to enhance an individuals Self Esteem and confidence levels. The project worked in collaboration with the Judo Association and provided 10 week courses. One young person quoted:
"I am glad I took part in the self defence course - my self esteem has really changed for the better."
A DVD was produced which included stories of some of the young people's experiences who engaged with the HYPAC project and highlighted the impact victims are left with following an incident. For further information about services that support young victims of crime please contact Young Hackney.
